Fun reminder that these original pieces are available for sale:
I love this concept that Stolitz is but also isn't perfect for each other. Like, if they weren't two intensely traumatized individuals, they could just fall in love with each other so easily but because they have all these barricades, they have to constantly work to be together.
Like, of COURSE Stolas knows how to dance because he's had to put years of training into it to be proper royalty and the fact that Blitz is like "Okay, well... I can fucking do this because I want him to smile" and it's just something he can pull out of his back pocket and do naturally - it's nice.
Like, the more traditional way to explore this trope is to have Blitz be the clumsy bumpkin who needs someone else to teach him to dance before he even tries to attempt sweep Stolas off his feet. But that's not the case. He already knows how from the get go, he just figures out he wants to.
Here's the thing that I've always loved about Blitz's character - he's capable. Like, physically, he's capable. He's got all of these skills that he can apply to do his job and now he's using them to dance with the love of his life. He's just and emotional idiot and I find that beautiful.
I can't get over how romantic this is.

Man had no issue grabbing Stolas and kissing him like his life depended on it but still bailed at his first opportunity. They're both so damaged that they're made for each other.
Blitz has been kind to him in comparison.
Man so beaten down and broken that he can only be strong.

the book reads 'It's alright to say No. You will always be a villain in someone's story...'

Two of my favorite Youtubers recently had a baby and it's been so interesting to listen to them talk about it because they're exhausted but at the same time elated. It's oddly refreshing to hear two people be *happy* they're parenting a newborn but also be honest that it's not for everyone.
Stolas: Literally sings an entire song about how he will die alone and is a monster if Blitz rejects him.
Also Stolas: I don't expect him to accept so there's no reason to further any more conversation because he doesn't want me.
EXACTLY! Especially with their argument prior, Stolas doesn't feel like he MATTERS to Blitz, so he becomes deaf to Blitz's way of telling him he is.
Stolas represents how broken up and scattered unlearning prejudice can be once you hit that tipping point and realize just how hurt you've left people. It isn't a clean process that easily tied up so you can slap a "Good Job" sticker on your record. And I think that scares a lot of people.
But y'all - a part of storytelling is breaking down the human experience piece by piece and structuring it to tell a full story. And this isn't an 80's sitcom where all misunderstandings are summed up within a half hour lesson and a group hug at the end.
Stolas being JUST AS MESSY as Blitz about his feelings must be SO CONFUSING because Stolas sings about messing up but he obviously can't MEAN that because he doesn't know what he's done and isn't trying to make himself a completely different person and changing for the better - for good.
So he's drunk, he's hurt, and he has FEELINGS that he doesn't want, so when Blitz tries to actually talk to him like an adult, his idiot ass can only think to remark on what EVERYONE ELSE at the party feels, despite Blitz needing to know why STOLAS actually cares.
Now add in the fact that he has his own trauma where his feelings are trivialized - Andrealphus infantilizes him at the trial so easily that it's not a far stretch to believe that this is normal for him. So his VERY unhealthy coping mechanism is to try drink them away.
But that's not really how things like this works. Stolas DOES know he's at fault somewhere, but he's also hurt and surrounded by enablers who've ALSO been hurt, so he can't really see his own behavior in the right perspective - which means he has no idea what he's actually done.
And this is a bit of projection, I think, from some - specifically those of a younger demographic - where acknowledgment of your mistake means you HAVE to make it right in exactly the correct way, otherwise that's worse than the mistake itself. If you act otherwise, then that means your a liar.
But something that I feel is pretty consistent with the heavy criticism towards Stolas's character (and... pretty much everyone in the cast but one thing at a time here) is this expectation that because he recognizes he's messed up, that must mean he will be better... instantly.
The entire bridge is dedicated to Stolas going "I messed up somewhere, how is this my fault?" but the lyric I'm highlighting seems to be the sticking point. It's the "I know you started this, but I made this worse by not proving myself". He KNOWS he fucked up.
"You're the thief but you were mine to earn" is such a good line. SUCH A GOOD LINE but can be thrown onto the growing pile of reasons why Stolas haters are looking for the wrong things from his character arc. Just...
