I can't believe it's taken games this long to begin embracing HDR and they're still terrible at it. It's hard to blame them though when half of every "HDR" display is a fake.

playing games from the 90s and 2000s i'm always amazed by the kind of leaps in tech we left behind in favor of rendering fidelity in the 8th gen. Old games had things like HDR, soft dynamic shadows, EAX, positional audio. We used to have dedicated sound cards, we used to be a real fucking country!!

Metroid's development was rushed and the game was severely limited on space. The things that make Metroid so unique and innovative are undoubtedly a result of these limitations, but I can't help but wonder what it could be if it was unshackled from those limitations...

the MMC3 cart enabled things like scrolling in two directions at one a la Super Mario Bros 3. Prior to MMC3, games could only scroll either vertically or horizontally, but never both. In Metroid they use door transitions to hide this and in Zelda they use a fixed camera

For those who don't know, NES games had physical components and chips inside the cartridges to upgrade the functionality of the console. That's why the difference between tech is so pronounced from the beginning to the end of the consoles lifespan. Metroid and Zelda ran on MMC1 chips (in the US)

I feel like enhancements to old games should definitely fall into this kind of category. Sort of like a PC port with all the settings cranked to ultra or a same-gen rerelease

I think what I really want is like the Pokemon Polished Crystal or Thief The Black Parade of Metroid romhacks

i think the ppl who don't get cd are ppl who try to process it as an action-platformer like Sonic 1-3. But cd is a physics-based puzzle platformer. on subsequent playthroughs it's a sandbox platformer

Art is not something we consume. Art is something we do.

Artificially-generated ‘art’ does not fall beyond the purview of our definition of art because it lacks aesthetic merit. It has nothing to do with aesthetics. AI ‘art’ is not art because it is not something that the ‘artist’ has done.

no state has a right to exist. every state must perpetually justify its existence to the people it rules. this is called the "consent of the governed" and it's a founding principle of republican democracy. it's disturbing how much the rhetoric has shifted to accomodate authoritarianism

Trying to make a distinction from "this is art the artist makes to deal with trauma" and "this is the artist's very clear fetish" puts the privacy of real life victims at risk. I shouldn't have to give you a laundry list of all my triggers and traumas for you to decide my art has the right to exist
