BE WARNED: Applying for a new passport is NOT a quick fix. It can take weeks or even months. The State Department is no longer issuing new 'X' passports. If you are a U.S. citizen with an 'X' passport and have any international travel planned, you need to start this process IMMEDIATELY. (17/17)
borgpup.bsky.social
This creates a terrible situation where U.S. citizens can be stranded either abroad or at home. The only official solution is to apply for a new U.S. passport and have the gender marker changed to either 'M' or 'F'. (16/17)
borgpup.bsky.social
However, for domestic air travel, they CAN still use their 'X' passport as a valid ID. The TSA accepts U.S. passports for ID, and as we covered, the TSA's domestic systems accommodate the 'X' marker. Your passport is still a valid ID (TSA), just not for international flight manifests (CBP). (15/17)
borgpup.bsky.social
First, for international air travel, a U.S. citizen with an 'X' passport is in the same situation as a foreign national. The CBP's APIS system will reject the passport, and airlines will not be able to check them in for flights into or out of the country. (14/17)

What about U.S. citizens who currently hold a U.S. passport with an "X" gender marker?
This situation is uniquely challenging. (13/17)
borgpup.bsky.social
The TSA has specifically updated its systems to accept "X" gender markers. You CAN fly domestically with a valid, unexpired REAL ID (like a state driver's license) that has an "X" marker. Most major U.S. airlines also allow you to select "X" when booking your ticket. (12/17)

Diff. agencies, different rules.
International travel = Customs & Border Protection (CBP). Their APIS data system is the one blocking "X" markers. Transportation Security Administration (TSA)'s Secure Flight program governs domestic travel, and it has separate policies, at least for now. (11/17)

Okay, let's switch gears and answer a critical question I'm getting: What about DOMESTIC U.S. flights with a REAL ID that has an "X" marker?
Good news: The situation is completely different, and you are not affected by this ban. (10/17)

Once in Canada, you will be in a country whose systems recognize your passport. From major airports like Toronto Pearson or Vancouver International, you will be free to book a flight to your final destination. Please share this with anyone who may be trapped by this. (9/9)

ACTION PLAN: Make immediate plans for road travel to Toronto (YYZ) or Vancouver (YVR), where you will be free to use your passport to fly away from this hell.

You must meet all of Canada's separate entry requirements (e.g., visa, eTA), but plead for asylum if you have to. (8/9)
borgpup.bsky.social
This means you should be able to exit the United States at a land border. Your "X" passport is still a valid document to present to border officials for land crossing. This opens up an escape route via Canada. (7/9)
borgpup.bsky.social
For foreign nationals with 'X' passports who are currently IN the United States and may now be stranded: There is a potential, but urgent, workaround. The issue is with the U.S. air travel system, not the passport's validity as a travel document itself. (6/9)

Please check your travel documents immediately if you have upcoming travel. Contact your airline if you are affected. Boost this to ensure this information reaches everyone who needs to see it.

USA flights: New APIS transmission rules on gender codes and U.S. passport number formats
Air operators flying to USA need to comply with new APIS transmission rules on gender codes and U.S. passport number format, starting October 2025.

Be aware of conflicting info: Some official sites may still say the passport document itself is "valid for entry." While true, it's irrelevant for air travel, as the system airlines must use will now block the document. This is a technical barrier will make flying impossible at midnight. (4/9)
borgpup.bsky.social
This means that even if your "X" marker passport is valid and years from expiring, the airline's system will automatically reject it when they try to check you in. You will not be able to get a boarding pass. This affects all travelers, regardless of citizenship. (3/9)
borgpup.bsky.social
Here's the technical reason: The U.S. Customs and Border Protection's (CBP) Advance Passenger Information System (APIS), which airlines are required to use for check-in, will no longer accept "X" as a gender code. It will now only process "M" or "F". (2/9)

🚨 URGENT U.S. TRAVEL ALERT 🚨
Heads up, everyone. A critical rule change goes into effect TOMORROW, Oct 14, that will prevent people with an "X" gender marker on their passport from flying to, from, or through the United States. Please read and share!!! (1/9)
