It’s not as though every site would need to develop its own platform from scratch to do so. This seems very surmountable for those who want to surmount it. As you say, lack of motivation is the barrier. I’m a big PAY FOR JOURNALISM cheerleader but FFS, make it reasonable to do so.

Also, since a few corporate behemoths own a lot of newspapers, they could (?) create a silver lining to that deeply troubling cloud by letting you pay to read, say, 12 articles a year or whatever from among all their sites. I would go for that.

I'm doing research that takes me to a lot of newspaper sites that want me to buy a subscription to read one article. It's disheartening---I would GLADLY pay to read that article, but I'm not buying a year's subscription for that privilege.

The entire incident is infuriating and terrifying. She’s a Latina woman who was working a service job. On her way home late at night, with her headphones in, she was detained for an hour by masked federal agents who wouldn’t give her their names.

Maria Greeley, 44, had just finished working a double shift at the Beach Bar on Ohio Street
earlier this month when she said she was surrounded by three federal agents who grabbed her, forced her hands behind her back and zip tied her.
Headphones in, Greeley had been focused on getting home to her two dogs for a walk.
Instead, she said she was detained by masked agents who did not answer when she asked for names. They questioned her for an hour, she said.

I still cry when I think about the truck ad with the calf lost in the rain, even though the point of the ad was that the truck helped the guy rescue the calf, and even though (as my partner reminds me) "THAT CALF IS AN ACTOR.
