Year 11 looked at Magic squares today. Which leads onto factorising quadratics. Next lesson will be just factorising quadratics.
(For some reason rotating won't work)
You highlighted the mode grade in each bracket but actually highlighting the median is prettier...

anyone found ways (as a teacher or head of maths) to come out of a week feeling positive about the difference they've made rather than exhausted by the endless unfinished jobs? #maths
Content of the orange ones is weird... none of them get close to 40% even in "their own" age group. Would be interested to see, say "hit me baby one more time" graph, would expect it to be a lot higher in the orange category

A vital maxim in education is richer kids will generally be fine, but if you screw up it's disadvantaged kids that suffer.
On board with this *but* it depends on the purpose of what we are doing the multiplication for

But if I wanted to multiplicate accurately I'd probably reach for the calculator

@adamboxereducation.bsky.social whilst I agree with a lot of the changes in the 2010s it’s a shame to hear NG describe grid method multiplication as a nonsense method.

It’s grounded in understanding the structure of the maths and is based on an area model - the most concrete example we have.

My advice was "it may be worth an appeal to see if you get more leniency the second time round"

Turns out I was right!
BUT LOOK - we have some many inequities in our maths exams: kids who get the more expensive calculators get easier marks, kids whose parents can afford frivolous appeals will have grades changed
However, I emailed the parent and said "you could give it a go and see if you get a more lenient marker"

Behold, the grade has changed!
I appreciate these are wrong, before I get people suggesting I want marks for wrong answers again.
reviewed a gcse paper. my view was harsh marking but that i could see why dropped marks. one paper had 4 marks dropped for what I viewed as stringent reasons, such as fraction lines not going all the way across and 2hrs 45 mins being written as 2.45hrs.

Year 8 looked at Square numbers and used them to problem solve sums.
