In what are you trying the swabs? Coral?
I used chelex in the past for my small copepods, when I was doing single gene, etc. (that is, not for genomics or metab/metag), and works like a charm. But, happy to try new things!! Are you PCRing anything in particular after?

Lysis with chelex and heat (p-k if you like too, with final deactivation in the water bath. Bringing powder and then adding just water on the field, then fridge?), then settle. Did not think about filtering, but might work too!

If you leave the chelex to go down enough, you might be able to get clean supernatant
