1/2. I watched 'En dirigeable sur les champs de bataille' (1919) for the first time a few years ago. These are just short extracts from the 72 min film, recording the destruction across northern France that took place during WW1. The horror of watching it is overwhelming.

'The Reader.' (1885) Ferdinand Hodler said of the elderly sitters he used in his work: 'None of them any longer expected anything of life... They were all characterised by a desperate submission to an inevitable and inconsolable destiny... that is why I painted them.'

I miss my father more deeply with each passing year; your lovely woodcut print is, I think, by Dorothy Blackham.

On Sunday, about 250k in Amsterdam protested, the largest demonstration in decades, much more reported on in EU than in UK - the first words spoken, by an organiser, in this Dutch news report, translate as : 'There's never a wrong time to protest for human rights'. nos.nl/video/258528...

There are two kinds of reactionary centrism:

1. "The radical left are lunatics, the far right has legitimate concerns"

2. "Vote for me and uphold zombie neoliberalism or else you are helping the fascists"

They are inconsistent but people like Starmer, Marcon & co switch between them all the time.

"Aristotle was profoundly right ... ethics is concerned with how to live and human happiness ... this sort of 'practical knowledge' is ... wider than the sphere of 'science' ... and a cultural necessity if we are to arrive at a sane and human view of ourselves or of science." Hilary Putnam (1978)
'Trad Night' at Mulligan's, Amsterdam; a group of musicians huddle around a bar-room table, summoning Irish music, deep, old & sprightly - enchanting onlookers.

In other news ... the Sunday morning concert at Concertgebouw in Amsterdam was not sh*t; Brahms & Strauss were actually rather wonderful:
Interior of a classical concert hall; standing ovation from a large crowd for Radio Filharmonisch Orkest, Groot (Mannen) Omroepkoor, Karina Canellakis, (dirigent) & Sophie Harmsen (alt).
