When Akaashi recalled this moment years later, he never could quite remember how he responded.

He did remember, that the fire he felt on court couldn’t compare to the the all-consuming warmth of Bokuto’s lips on his.
“I have loved you,” Keiji whispers, “and longed for you, and waited for you, for me, for my chance. I was…afraid I missed it.”

Bokuto smiles. “Never,” he whispers back. “You’ve always been the only one in my heart, Keiji.”
“Are you fucking stupid?”

A scowl grows on Bokuto’s face at Konoha’s question. How rude.

“Fuck off, dude. At this point, nothing matters when my brain’s too busy thinking about how badly I want to kiss Akaashi!”
“I’m sure.” Akaashi curled his fingers around his hand. “I think—you’re kind. You look out for others. You’re honest and thoughtful. You work hard. I’m grateful to be your friend. I’ve never been more grateful. Your courage and your love inspire me. You’re good enough. You’ve always been good.”
“Hey, Akaashi.” He broke from one of his lapsed silences. “Do you think less of me?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”
Bokuto’s eyes continue scanning over his features. Like it’s the only thing he knows to do. Like it’s the only response there is. Like he just can’t help himself.

His voice is soft too.

“I am.”
And in a room full of people looking at him, Bokuto Koutarou is looking at Akaashi.

“You’re staring,” Akaashi says, like a warning. Like it would be so embarrassing to be caught, to be seen staring at him.
Volleyball had always been in the cards for Akaashi. A hobby. A pastime.

Colliding with Bokuto’s aspirations and demands, however, broke him into pieces and rebuilt him into someone new.
“Okay, he’s kinda cool. I see why you love him.”

Akaashi didn’t have the energy to refute that claim when all his essence was fixated on Bokuto Koutarou. The entire world was about to understand how cool Bokuto was, the whole world was about to love him. It was about damn time.
“To be honest, it’s something I wished for a lot. That I could become someone you could love.”

“You think I don’t love you?” It was the first time he heard Akaashi’s voice crack, the calm façade fading. “Do you think I won’t love you because you’re in pain?”
“There’s no way you know what AO3 is.”

Bokuto snorted, typing both his and Akaashi’s names into it. “Of course I know what AO3 is. And Wattpad. And Fanfiction[dot]net.”

“Your poor fans.”
“Does it hurt?”

Bokuto shakes his head. With adoration, he gazes at the Ravenclaw. With devotion, he reaches for his hand, and intertwines their fingers.

“Not anymore.”
“Bo,” Kuroo said, eyeing Bokuto’s hands still eagerly clasping Akaashi’s. “Let’s go.”

“Whoops, sorry, got carried away. I like handshakes.” Idiot, what a stupid thing to say, Bokuto thought to himself.

Akaashi’s lips twitched. “So I can tell. Well, see you around.”
