The fact that top Republicans are already fearmongering about, lying about, the No Kings rallies this Saturday, across the US, tells you how worried they are about public pressure and protest against their reactionary, autocratic, anti-American agenda.

"Authoritarianism, it's a cancer. The symptoms are here, today... We thought it couldn't happen here... and now the disease is growing, metastasizing in America. But there is a cure—it requires you. On October 18, Americans will stand up, peacefully, for what makes America, America." nokings.org

It’s not that I know better, it’s that I’ve received letters from people of colour asking for stickers expressing support for the campaign. Should I disregard their lived experience?

This week in my little corner of Bluesky I've been feeling a bit like the guy in the famous H M Bateman cartoon 'The Man Who Suggested We Should Reclaim The English Flag From The Racists'

They didn’t just NOT give Trump the Nobel Peace Prize, they wrote a citation that reads like an anti-Trump rallying cry.

(He’s gonna extra-tariff Norway now, isn’t he?)

'When authoritarians seize power, it is crucial to recognize courageous defenders of freedom who rise and resist,' the Norwegian Nobel Committee said as it announced Maria Corina Machado as the winner of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize

Is anyone going to address my question or are you just going to queue up to attack me for asking it? Yes it’s a tough one, but it has to be addressed if we hope to build a mass movement to counter the rise of racism in this country
billybragg.bsky.social
I’m not suggesting we build solidarity with racists. For most working class people, this is what the England flag represents - our multiracial team. If we treat everyone who identifies with 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 as the same as the racist lamppost flaggers, how can we build solidarity with them to defeat the racists?
billybragg.bsky.social
But the majority of the white working class identify with that flag and you can't dictate to them how they identify any more than the TERFs can dictate to you how to identify. And how do you expect to build a better society for everyone if you dismiss 'white' as a synonym for 'racist'?
billybragg.bsky.social
The fact that you dismiss the white working class as racists I find really troubling. Those gammons on X are a tiny but noisy minority. Most are fair-minded people who struggle to make ends meet. If our politics is not about making their lives better, what is it for?
billybragg.bsky.social
I recognise that some on the left think the flag is irredeemable. It's an argument I've heard many times. But it begs the question of how you hope to build solidarity with the working class when you're telling them that the symbol with which many of them identify is the same as the swastika?

I’d like to think that a message that says No To Hate has a positive effect on us all.
billybragg.bsky.social
Have a look on my Facebook page. There are plenty of people asking me to make stickers with the same message over the Scottish and Welsh flags.

I’m not saying I know best. I just have a different opinion about how to address the rise of the far right. We happen to disagree about how to go about it, but that’s not unusual on the left.

I’m not presuming to lecture you on racism. I haven’t discounted what you’ve said, merely challenged you as you have challenged me. And just because others agree with you, doesn’t mean I have to.

The Lionesses fans are not waving in support of colonial oppression.
billybragg.bsky.social
What’s that got to do with racism?

I’m willing to debate. And if you don’t need me to challenge your views I suggest you stop posting comments in my thread.
billybragg.bsky.social
As I’ve already stated flags are all about context
billybragg.bsky.social
Not really. I’m just challenging your views about flags and what it means to be English.
billybragg.bsky.social
Hey I can take it! I know there are plenty of people on the left who don’t like flags. I just happen to believe that by refusing to grasp that nettle we surrender the right to declare who belongs in our society to the far right. I’m not prepared to do that anymore
