Our latest episode of 'Games From a Hat' was taken down from YouTube (and a copyright strike on the channel incurred) owing to [muted] footage of Beyblade. We're putting the episode up as a freebie on Patreon where it should be safe from spurious copyright claims. www.patreon.com/posts/141170...

At the risk of shamelessly plugging: Playing through all of this game was a trip. It's like you can see every single seam in how the sausage got made as you progress, and watch as it all falls apart in real time. What's more, its patches somehow broke the game worse! youtube.com/playlist?lis...

Fun fact: The hilarious cover for the PAL release of Ju-on: The Grudge on Wii attributes a flattering box quote to one "T. Kanazawa," providing no publication source.

Tomio Kanazawa is the senior producer for the game's European localization team; Rising Star Games.

'Ju-on: The Grudge' released on this day in 2009.

Described as a "haunted house simulator," intended to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Ju-On film franchise. Sluggish traversal is occasionally punctuated by laughable attempts at jump scares, but mostly by tedious QTEs.

A new, very spooky PlayStation Edition of "Games From a Hat" is up now on YouTube! Tune in to see Hermie Hopperhead Hop-A-Bout in the Deadly Skies above the Deadheat Road. Also, Ultraman is here too, for some reason. Terrifying!! www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYjS...

There's actually a lot to be said about this curious cartridge: We could highlight its technical achievements, try to appreciate the unique level designs, or even compare its content to the original game.

Anyway, here's a funny version of "Grabbag": www.youtube.com/watch?v=GR4E...

'Duke Nukem 3D' on the Sega Mega Drive released on this day in 1998.

Tec Toy's "conversion" of Duke 3D to the Mega Drive is nothing short of a technical marvel. Unfortunately; it is also frustratingly clunky, notoriously difficult, and challenging to even visually parse.

'Hulk Hogan's Main Event' released on this day in 2011.

A Kinect-required title in which you pantomime wrestling moves, marred by poor detection and ultra-repetitive gameplay. Produced during Hogan's time with TNA, but not leveraging any of the promotion's talent or branding.

'Yaris' released on this day in 2007.

A free XBLA advergame intended to promote a line of Toyota vehicles, by depicting them as carrying an assortment of laser weapons fit to fend off foes. Delisted after a year due to overwhelming negative reception / widespread mockery.

We definitely don't doubt that: Despite our Brand™, our mission statement has always been to understand the circumstances behind oft-maligned games, to give them their due process and due credit, and to help viewers understand that game development is a tough fucking gig haha

(Also, hello! We obviously recognize you as one of the game's writers / sources quoted, and we assume you're being a bit facetious here haha)

I don't rightfully know what else to call a dev cycle where everyone seems to resent a singular unnamed producer / publisher rep, another producer admits to having constant arguments over the inclusion of certain characters in the story, and the end product released to lukewarm reception / sales lol

If you happen to have a spare hour (lol), we'd love to hear if you think we represented the game fairly in our opening rundown, and if there are any additional reflections on the game you might like to provide? We really do try to give oft-maligned their due process / benefit of the doubt.

@hypnocrite.bsky.social Hey howdy! Hope you don't mind us @ing you, but we're doing a playthrough of Homecoming on stream that opens with a "history section" on the game's development; using some of your quotes as sources, and trying our best to give context to the end product.

'Balls of Fury' released on this day in 2007.

A critically panned video game tie-in to a critically panned film of the same name. A no-frills (if not imprecise) ping pong game, with the additional wrinkle of awkwardly-rendered actor likenesses. Truly, a game no one asked for.

'C1-Circuit' released on this day in 1996.

An early entry in the annals of street racing games, produced for the PlayStation by one-time developer / publisher INVEX. Awkward handling and busted collision detection render the game nearly unplayable.
