Like "my favorite Spidey stories" threads? Confidentially, we in the fan community refer to them as "long underwear rants"! And as you know, they're a dime a dozen! But, we think you may find our @benreilly149.bsky.social thread just a bit...different!

Zipporah circumcised their son and touched Moses' feet (possibly a euphemism) with the foreskin to keep God from killing Moses. The question is whether Zipporah is the Cushite wife Aaron and Miriam are grumbling about in Numbers 12:1. Is Cush in Midian? There is disagreement about that.

I'm sorry to hear that. I think Ultimatum is uncharacteristic of Loeb, whose successes are much bigger than his failures. The Long Halloween, Dark Victory and For All Seasons are some of my favorite stories.

Millar's choices dull the Xavier/Magneto dynamic; he says they were friends once but there's no indication as to why they would have been, and following Millar's lead Loeb resolves their conflict in a brutal anticlimax.

The Lee-Kirby X-Men is their weakest collaboration, not without its merits but basically Marvel's discount bin Doom Patrol. Lee tried to co-opt the civil rights narrative later writers developed and Claremont perfected but the 05 X-Men were about as popular with the public as the Avengers & FF.

Hickman benefits from working with characters readers already have a connection with.

Writing, yeah, that's...roughly analogous to what went on here. (I do love a lot of Loeb's work)

I know you warned me @elvingjack.bsky.social but some things you've just got to experience for yourself. This is not one of those things. It's too late for me but to anyone out there who's never read Ultimatum...

Magneto is Millar and UXM's biggest unforced error. Millar not only had an opportunity to model Magneto after Claremont's more sympathetic & conflicted version, but to do so from scratch and thus avoid the baggage of the irredeemably evil Lee-Ditko version. Instead we got the most evil Magneto ever.
benreilly149.bsky.social
Unfortunately Millar followed up with a cynical and frankly unpleasant story where Magneto returns, commits mass murder, and nothing ever comes of the softer side of his personality that manifested with Xavier's interference.

My favorite UXM arc is Xavier fake-killing then mind-wiping Magneto & giving him a new life only to be on the receiving end of a pep talk from "Erik" when he's at his lowest point.

Xavier's implied master plan to insinuate himself into powerful institutions like the military to further his pacifist agenda is Millar's most promising concept. Unfortunately nothing ever comes of it.

As many generations of comics fans have wondered, what does it feel like to be turned into a puppet? How is that feeling recognised for being what it is? Has Flash been turned into a puppet before? Is it perhaps a much more frequent occurrence on Earth One?

So that was Wednesday October 15th 2025. Crikey. Another day done, another (more or less) here. So it goes.

(Released this very month in 1962, The Flash #133, with its wonderful cover by Carmine Infantino,Murphy Anderson & Ira Schnapp.)

And so to bed. Sleep well, gentle sentients of Planet Earth.

Xavier is the character Millar writes best, and also, oddly, the one he has the least handle on; his peak Prof X moments play better in isolation, like teaser trailers.

Millar/Kubert's UXM is the antithesis to Bendis/Bagley's USM, which is to say it's a slick action vehicle that immediately pulls you in with the breakneck pacing and explosive visuals. It's a sleight of hand manuever but a good one. Problem is card tricks can only hold your attention for so long.

🧵 In preparation for Ultimate Endgame, I'm currently reading through the original Ultimate Universe and organizing my posts according to line. Welcome to the Ultimate X-Men thread, I hope you survive the experience!

Surprisingly, Iron Man #200 (Nov 1985) was NOT the first appearance of the Silver Centurion. Due to a scheduling error it appeared for the first time in WCA #1 the previous month, though that story takes place after IM 200

There is also a consistent biblical motif that certain conditions have to be met before the fulfillment of covenental promises, a historical arc which plays out (the gospel authors saw one such condition in the destruction of the temple in 70 C.E.).

Jesus instructs his disciples that his ascension is a prerequisite for the Holy Spirit to arrive. I take this on some level to mean that if he is present the disciples won't truly search out his teachings and give them new life (which fits with the gospels being written a generation later).
benreilly149.bsky.social
I do think that follows the logic of the narrative; Jesus' teachings must spread beyond his locale and lifetime through his disciples rather than him instituting a reign by force.
