I spent the summer learning about the QB development industry: the private coaches and elite camps that now produces many of the country's top prospects.

It's complex and costly, but for some — like J.J. McCarthy — it can fulfill childhood dreams. My project:

The making of J.J. McCarthy and the big business behind becoming an NFL quarterback
Is the Vikings’ new QB a product of a booming coaching industry, or was he destined to thrive in it? Either way, he’s a beacon for hopeful Vikings fans and an archetype for aspiring young players.

Sending out the call for #Vikings questions, for this week's mailbags in the Access Vikings newsletter/podcast.

Leave your questions here; both the newsletter and mailbag episode of the podcast will be out Friday.

Four of the NFL’s top QBs this year — Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, Daniel Jones and Jared Goff — are former top picks who washed out with their first teams.

As the #Vikings develop J.J. McCarthy, it’s a reminder that QB development sometimes requires patience: www.startribune.com/minnesota-vi...
Analysis: This season’s top NFL teams are showing that patience pays off at quarterback
How patient can the Vikings afford to be with J.J. McCarthy in a league that seems to steer teams toward impatience?

Andrew Van Ginkel will be working on a side field this week, Kevin O’Connell said. The edge rusher is “doing better” with his neck injury, but there’s no update yet on his availability. “I want to see how he does with some of that side field work,” O’Connell said.

Kevin O’Connell wasn’t ready to name a starter for Sunday, given the fact J.J. McCarthy is still working through practice and Carson Wentz is recovering from his left shoulder injury. “He was sore coming out of the game,” O’Connell said. “He’s gotten to a place where he can participate.”

The #Vikings opened Blake Cashman’s 21-day practice window as the linebacker returns from injured reserve. Kevin O’Connell said J.J. McCarthy, Donovan Jackson, Brian O’Neill and Michael Jurgens will all practice in varying capacities this week.

The concept the #Vikings ran on Jordan Addison's game-winning TD on Sunday was similar to the one they ran on Justin Jefferson's TD in Green Bay last year (Bobby Peters calls it Stick-Hitch in his book). The hitch converts to a fade vs. press coverage.

Not sure. I’m not in London, but he didn’t get asked about it after the game. Probably will be one of those things we ask Matt Daniels about the next time we talk to him.

Per source, NFL replay assist did not see a view that showed #Vikings kicker Will Reichard's fourth-quarter field goal hitting a wire. His 51-yard miss went wide right with 9:46 left in the game.

I did. After the play clock in Dublin last week, too.

Kevin O’Connell said Jordan Addison missed a walk-through this week, and was held out for the first quarter because of it. "Those kinds of things aren't up to our standards, and he knows that," O’Connell said.

Carson Wentz, playing behind a #Vikings offensive line that was down to one of its starters by the fourth quarter, went 9 of 9 for 71 yards and the touchdown on the last drive. Clutch performance in a drive the Vikings had to have.

Jeff Okudah tackles Jamari Thrash in bounds, and the #Vikings hang on for a badly-needed 21-17 win. They go to 5-0 in London, get a split on their international trip and head to their bye week 3-2.

Carson Wentz led a 10-play, 80-yard drive to take the lead on a 12-yard throw to Jordan Addison.

Isaiah Rodgers picks off the Hail Mary, but Kevin O’Connell called timeout before the snap. Browns will get one more.
bengoessling.bsky.social
Yep. Don't overthink it. Just find Jefferson.

The #Vikings flipped their tackles, with Justin Skule at left tackle and Walter Rouse on the right side. Christian Darrisaw's exit from the game was planned, the Vikings say; he'd reached his snap limit for the day as he returns from his torn ACL.
bengoessling.bsky.social
Walter Rouse is in at left tackle for the #Vikings as they start this drive in Browns territory. And Zavier Scott loses a fumble on the first play.
bengoessling.bsky.social
Browns will start backed up after a 77-yard(!) punt from Ryan Wright and a holding penalty. #Vikings could use a quick stop to keep the field position here.
bengoessling.bsky.social
Carson Wentz is back for the #Vikings, with a sleeve on his left shoulder to start the second half.
bengoessling.bsky.social
Walter Rouse was at left tackle on the #Vikings' last snap before halftime, as Max Brosmer took the kneel-down.
bengoessling.bsky.social
Carson Wentz is headed to the locker room before halftime. He is questionable to return with a shoulder injury.

Good morning from Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where the Vikings and Browns will kick off in 2.5 hours. Have already seen half the league represented in fan jerseys, but one Vikings jersey stuck out of the crowd

The #Vikings are placing Ryan Kelly on injured reserve, after his second concussion of the season last week, and activating C.J. Ham from IR for tomorrow’s game against the Browns.

Kelly will be out at least four weeks; the Vikings signed Vershon Lee to the active roster and waived Desmond Ridder.

From what I've heard here in London, sounds like a longshot for center Michael Jurgens to play Sunday vs. the Browns. Blake Brandel is expected to make his 25th NFL start, but his first at center. Undrafted rookie Joe Huber has been taking left guard reps and appears in line for his first NFL start
