Diagnosis is the freedom to realise that your personality is being what makes you happy. Easier said than done, of course…!

Me too! It's one of the best spots to sit in the world.

New episode of the podcast just out. This week we discuss; who is art's most forgotten artist? And, whether to buy a second-hand bench from the National Gallery for £800.

Icymi, gather there's a handful of tickets left for this. See you there!

This is going to be fun - I'll be speaking at Cirencester History Festival on Saturday 1st November, in the beautiful St John's church. Expect lots on gothic architecture, the sublime, and why Henry VIII is villain number 1 in the story of British art!

Ha! I think it belonged to a great aunt of mine. Certainly, on the Italian/Catholic side of my family. Glad you recognised it!

Not saying it isn't important! Simply that in our teaching, we have come to put too much emphasis on it. Especially early on.

We're fighting a battle on many fronts. Imho, one of the best ways to fight that battle is to actually make it more fun. But I may be biased, because I find the actual evidence to be the fun bit...!

Eek - keep with it! It's usually better in the later stages, if/when they finally let you have your own opinions...

Yes, though I would extend that into lower undegraduate. However, in some subjects (art history e.g.) the demands for historiography can be suffocating. This may be because it's a field which has become increasingly theoretical, and this requires deference to previous theories.

Yes indeed; my point is about where we find the balance. This needs addressing imho right back to GCSE level. It's a) turning students off the subject and b) inevitably going to be trouble for an AI generation.
