An attacker rammed a car into people outside a synagogue in Manchester, England, on Thursday, then went on a stabbing spree, killing two people in what the police called an act of terrorism on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar.

The police identified the attacker as Jihad al-Shamie, 35, a British citizen of Syrian descent. They said he had driven a car into people outside the synagogue in Manchester and stabbed others before he was shot and killed by the police.
