Chicken-of-the-Woods is named so for the way it tastes, though some say it tastes more like lobster than chicken. If you're foraging, remember to use at least 3 sources to identify your mushroom; there are many lookalikes for many mushrooms, and not all of them are safe or fun to eat.

The Common Puffball can be found in fields, gardens, and grassy clearings. Look for a round, off-white body whose top is covered in tiny spiky bumps. As the mushroom matures, it turns brown and a hole forms at the top, which is where it releases its spores in a puff; hence the name "puffball."

Witches' Butter can frequently be found on dead tree limbs, where it helps slowly break down the wood. When wet, its surface becomes gelatinous and slimy. Within days after rain, however, the fungus dries out into a shriveled mass, waiting for the next shower to revive it.

Shaggy Mane, also known as shaggy ink cap, is named for the way its shaggy white "scales" melt and turn inky black from the bottom up, eventually dissolving the fungus after it has spread its spores.
