More sub teacher than journalist these days, but also working on The Great American Novel. Still a soccer ref. Playing in a bunch of bands. Still curling. Keeping dystopian talk to the essentials so I can live my remaining days in some sort of peace.

In other words -- they're willing to destroy the lives of every trans woman just to stop a handful of trans women from competing in women's sports, even though they could stop those trans women from doing so with much better and less hateful arguments. And that includes @martinanav.bsky.social

One of the most depressing political trends I have witnessed has been seeing that the people who want to keep trans women out of women's sports don't base their arguments entirely on reasonable data about male puberty and fairness. Instead, they make it by dehumanizing *all* trans women.

A youth soccer referee postgame press conference, complete with thoughts about how recent events in the WNBA and the media flow downhill into youth sports.

(Obviously didn't really happen.)

QUIT AMPLIFYING WHAT THIS GUY SAYS!!!

We KNOW who he is. Why give him a platform?

I was yelling “Shoot!” through the screen to her at one point. I think Sheridan’s saves got into their heads — Rodman wasted a couple of shots shooting straight at her. Has to be better.

There’s no such thing as a “3 foul” card, which may be your point. Persistent infringement has no number or time control, for better or worse. All up to the ref. And it can be for team fouls as well, especially if they keep hacking the same player.
bdure.bsky.social
I didn't see any in the last 15 minutes of each half, but I missed the rest of the game, so I can't speak to those parts. Late in the game, Bethune complained quite a bit about a foul called against her, and Lianne Sanderson agreed it shouldn't have been called, but I absolutely would've called it.
bdure.bsky.social
Granted, I've been a little likely to defend referees after watching people exalting Cheryl Reeve as some kind of hero for complaining about a call **that the refs got absolutely right**. But I thought the calls at the end of each half in Spirit-Wave were fair. #nwsl #makewaves #thatsthespirit

What did Dopka do wrong? I watched the last 15 minutes of the first half and the last 15 minutes of the game -- didn't see anything.
bdure.bsky.social
I'd imagine they're happier now that he allowed a bit more extra time!

I haven't seen any calls that were wrong, anyway. Lianne Sanderson may disagree, but to my knowledge, she's not a ref.
bdure.bsky.social
The Spirit have GOT to be sharper than this. Monday missed an easy one, and Rodman put two straight breakaways right at Sheridan. On the second, she could've chipped Sheridan at any time. Maybe the Wave don't deserve the draw, but the Spirit don't deserve the win. #nwsl

EDIT: Never mind!

Newcastle is in the NWSL now?
bdure.bsky.social
In the closed-captioning for the Raiders-Commanders game, every time they say "Ashton Jeanty," it comes up as "Jen Psaki."
bdure.bsky.social
I'll say again -- how do officials get calls so wrong when they watch the replay?

In real time? It's a very difficult job. Watching replay? Ugh.
bdure.bsky.social
If you suffer from insomnia, may I recommend the broadcast of this Bournemouth-Newcastle game? Nothing of note until the 90th minute, with a free kick that might have awakened the commentators. #premierleague
bdure.bsky.social
Never ceases to amaze me how commentators and officials can look at replays and still get calls wrong.

#Purdue gets a gift vs. #USC

Correct. I just double-checked page 149 of the LOTG.
bdure.bsky.social
I think enforcing the Laws as they're meant to be enforced is a good step toward better officiating and more respect for refs (which may in turn encourage more people to become refs themselves).
bdure.bsky.social
I'd say there's a 95% chance that ball was out, but I worry about bad precedent than I worry about simple errors. Refs are going to miss calls -- I've even missed at least two in seven years. (OK, maybe more.) But this is an ongoing thing.
bdure.bsky.social
Always hate to say things like this, but you have to wonder if McKeown would've drawn a dangerous free kick if she had dropped to the ground there. #NWSL
bdure.bsky.social
I really, really, really want to see PRO refs start giving yellow cards for delaying a restart or failing to respect the distance. Stars getting away with a lot here. And this makes it difficult to enforce at youth level. #NWSL

I wonder why they don’t just pick up the Paramount commentators. Maybe they could afford more cameras with fewer commentators.

How close is Krueger to a return? They could certainly use her right now. #NWSL #WashingtonSpirit

Is she doing commentary on UK TV?
