Who has read and has thoughts about Kang, "Vegetarian"? I read it and hated it. Well written and vivid, yes. Clearly a screed against male abuse of women, ok. Maybe the veg is a modern Daphne? I'm trying to make sense of the Nobel prize.

I'm about to be interviewed for "Sciences Humaines" about why we today are (still) falling in love. But the question I want to pose in return is: is the love of the past implied by that "still" the same as the love "we" have today? And indeed, is "my" love the same as "yours"? Wish me luck!

Just back from the Gustave Caillebotte exhibit at the Art Institute of Chicago, I urge all who live within 100 miles of the city to go to that amazing show. Caillebotte's ability to capture of the play of light alone is worth the trip. But most marvelous is the lost world he evokes. Go!

I'm reading De Waal's "Hare" trying to like it because it was recommended to me by friends I admire. But I find it strangely unmoving. Interesting, yes. And it's wonderful to know the identities of the people in Renoir's "Boating Party." But, I'd love to know other thoughts about this book.
