Murad "had been deported to Egypt."

Hearing "the news, the elderly mother broke into tears and random screams in her wheelchair."

"The mother moved her hand in an apparent refusal to hear, continuing to weep."

Palestinians freed from Israeli prison denied reunion with families as Trump claims a ‘forever’ peace
Palestinian families eager to reunite with loved ones due to be freed learned that Israel had deported them instead. Amid the pain and the decimation of Gaza, U.S. President Donald Trump declared the…

He is 13. A 7th grader w/ a pending asylum case. Being held more than 500 miles from home & housed w/ adults. He called his mom crying, & reported that he’s sleeping on concrete w/ an aluminum blanket.

How is this anything other than sick & shameful? www.bostonglobe.com/2025/10/12/m...

Einstein had wanted to hire Noether.

I am the first woman mathematics professor in my university (funded 1978), since 2002.

I was a student at Scuola Normale, Pisa, where there never ever was a woman maths professor; they do have one (1) woman mathematician with a permanent non professor role.

in order to align llms with human values, we use llms to base our understanding of human values
reads: Given the financial and logistical challenges linked to human annotation, we choose to employ the feedback generated by the GPT-3.5-turbo API as a substitute for human feedback.

"My children are dead!"

A Palestinian prisoner released today was expecting to embrace his family, only to find out they had been killed weeks ago in Israel's genocidal war on Gaza.

It was absolutely impossible to make him understand the connection between the two sentences above.

I am left to ponder that he honestly didn’t get it, and what the implications of this are, because this guy is definitely not an outlier.

A mathematician said over dinner he’s okay with using LLMs (despite the impact on people living near data centres and on a heating planet) so he can avoid “stupid secretarial tasks”.

I had mentioned minutes earlier how usually those who humanise AIs de-humanise some subset of humans. 🤦‍♀️

I'm not a financial expert, but I have noticed a significant number of articles in the media suggesting that the Generative AI industry is a bubble waiting to burst. There are recent pieces here on the BBC website, here in the Financial Times (from which I stole the cartoon), and here in the Irish Times, to name but a few.

👴🏻"Yes, I know this person did horrific things to Black and brown people, but if you don't pretend to honor his memory, you are the bad guy here!"🤡

No. It doesn't work like that.

Not for Kirk. Not for Columbus.

There have been *millions* of great Italian Americans. Columbus is not one of them.

Your reminder—or maybe no one ever told you—that complications from a measles infection include immune amnesia (where you lose immunity to everything), vision and hearing loss, brain damage, and a fatal brain disease called Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis that can show up years later.

Hundreds of children in multiple states are in quarantine and on remote learning due to measles outbreaks.

The decline in MMR vaccinations has resulted in the US experiencing an increase of measles cases with 1563 total cases & 3 deaths since January.

A friend in my student days lost his hearing to measles as a tween. He also read lips. He remembered music.

NB Italy was late in introducing measles vaccination.

Finally, back when I was young, if you wanted to learn algebraic stacks the only reference were photocopies of notes by Laumon, later expanded jointly with Moret-Bailly, and finally made into a book.

I am personally deeply thankful for Laumon's notes, and sad he passed away so soon.

You can read a lot also about his PhD students. Everyone can be lucky, but when two of your students win Fields medals, and a third becomes the first woman maths professor at Harvard, you're doing something right. And those three are just the most famous students.

I will not say much about his research, which is mostly beyond my understanding: suffices to say he proved something called the Fundamental Lemma (of geometric Langlands theory) and got a Clay Award.

I learned last Saturday that Gérard Laumon had passed away the previous Saturday. I deeply admire many aspects of his work, which I want to mention briefly.
