I think something that's happened with the narrative around behaviour is that there's a lot of focus on 'managing' young people who find classroom environments challenging rather than thinking about how to adapt classroom environments ahead of time. The system would benefit from more flexibility. 🤷‍♀️

A new article from our friend Anne Borden King reminds us that the autism research world has a long history of getting autism wrong. https://endseclusion.info/48vKBl4 #EndSeclusion

But we also acknowledge that the #OAP is discriminatory

Neurodivergent (but not autistic) & disabled children DON'T have a comparable program like the OAP for funding & free programs

They need support too

It's time there's an Ontario DISABILITY Program

#ONpoli #autism #neurodiversity #disability
While there's a wait for funding, there ARE free supports that families registered in the OAP can access

Re: 5 year wait

Families were waiting up to 5 yrs for the old Autism Intervention Program (2000-18) & not everyone was eligible for this

This OAP started rolling out in the middle of the COVID lockdown

Core funding just launched in 2021

Still a work-in-progress. Please let us know of any places and people that we can add 😁

@empoweredkidson.bsky.social Many of your members offer these programs

But they're not being utilized as much they should

Are parents not aware they're available? Are they not the right fit?

Need to really look at making these more accessible & relevant for families

#ONpoli #OAP #autism
A group has put out the results of their survey about the Ontario Autism Program

The OAP provides BOTH funding & free programs. While there's a wait for funding, parents can still access free programs

But results show there's low uptake on these programs which is concerning

Parents need to be told about what supports they CAN access & what things they CAN do while waiting for funding

AND providers of these free programs need to be more responsive to family needs

#OAP #autism #ONpoli 4/4
Foundational Family Services & CMEY are meant to teach parents about #autism & ways to support their child

Yes therapy, if needed, is important

But autistic children benefit MORE from having the adults around them actually understanding autism & accommodating their neurotype

#OAP #ONpoli 3/4
Also concerning is the caveat under the stats

NO ONE is saying the free programs in the OAP are a substitute for direct service. They're complementary

BUT they can still be helpful to parents

Not sure where the disconnect is but these programs should be utilized more
