I post about animals, alive and extinct, and the insane, often obscure things they do. Often about hunting and fighting.

If that interests you, feel free to follow, I guess.

Are there any depictions of zombie animals that you like?

Today I walked 5 miles (~8 km) at the local historical park. Took me 99 minutes in total to walk the entire loop.

I walked in my best athletic sneakers w/ new inserts (b/c my left foot was chafing w/ the og ones)...so now I know they'll be perfect for when I visit the Bronx Zoo.

So the Schöningen spears are pointed at both ends. Could Neanderthals have actually used both ends of these spears to stab prey with?
ausarchosaur.bsky.social
The Neanderthal one I posted above is that too. It's meant for kids, but damn it, I just want to assemble a skeleton!

Bottlenose dolphins have, interestingly enough, been recorded harassing Antillean manatee calves.

So that's...three surprisingly realistic, easily confusable AI animal videos making the rounds on Twitter these past couple of days.

This is gonna suck.

Been meaning to preorder this, but I'm probably going to have to spend the rest of the month recovering from my auto insurance expenses :(

We'll see what happens
ausarchosaur.bsky.social
I didn't post this b/c of the rex vs Trike thread I posted, but yeah, I have seen a Cape buffalo gored repeatedly in the belly by a white rhino in a much older video. It certainly proves the point I was making about horns there.
ausarchosaur.bsky.social
OOOOOOHHHHHHH!!!!!!

These look very nice! If they're small and cheap enough I'd be willing to get them.
ausarchosaur.bsky.social
I kind of want one of these plastic toy skeletons of some prehistoric animal that you can assemble again.

I used to have one of a mammoth and I remember it looking pretty good.

Anyone remember when Rugops was said to have a head "not designed for fighting or bone-crushing"? But it was always thought to have scales or armor in life (this appears tenable even now), and it had a shortened/deepened skull. Sounds like a decent weapon to me. 🤷‍♂️

Probably the wildest fact of all: this species is responsible for shorting out deep-sea fiberoptic cables installed by AT&T back in 1985.

(For the record, the Humboldt squid photo above was NOT a random choice. This species is actually fed on by the crocodile shark, which is surprising because the Humboldt squid itself is an active, sometimes aggressive predator. Wonder how big these eaten specimens were.)

It seems to be an active predator due to its narrow and keeled caudal peduncle, strongly forked caudal fin, and powerful musculature. Stomach contents included bristlemouths, lanternfishes, squid beaks, and shrimps.
Elongated bristlemouth, an example of the family. Apparently some Japanese fishermen have been bitten by this shark before, and it can bite very hard. Otherwise, it's not a threat to humans due to its small size, non-cutting teeth, and the fact that it usually lives far from land.
ausarchosaur.bsky.social
I've talked about crocodilian vs shark recently, but there's actually a shark species called the crocodile shark, so named b/c of its spike-like teeth and its habit of snapping vigorously when taken out of the water. One of its Japanese names is Mizu-wani ("water crocodile").

To be honest, despite it having an obvious winner, this fight in nature is interesting b/c you can’t NOT give the buffalo credit for trying, even holding out for a bit before it’s overpowered.
ausarchosaur.bsky.social
I saw what I think is a rather recent video (I could be wrong though) of a white rhino and a buffalo fighting.
ausarchosaur.bsky.social
So I think these parts will take place later on. Looks like Spear’s gonna lose the flesh on his right hand somehow.

I saw the early Patreon version of Hunted by Moonlight.

Best Dilophosaurus in media (granted, there aren’t that many, I think).
