After listening to a composer discuss how ai is transforming & destroying his industry, I was driven to create this piece. Embroidered on my hand-controlled #chainstitchembroidery machine w my interpretation of a famous woodcut of a Luddite destroying a jacquard loom.

When they put in flex posts a few years ago at 35th and Cedar literally all but 2 were gone in a matter of days, that's the worst retaining I've seen. I hope these ones fare better!
There's a local carshare service here that I use sometimes but mostly I find rentals too expensive. Earlier this summer I gave a friend some money so I could borrow their car for a week and go on a road trip. Worked out great for both of us!
Also most of the stuff I "need" a car for I don't really need. The options for meeting my needs that require biking or walking are a little more inconvenient but they force me to focus on my immediate physical community or to go without. That's fine!
I realized recently that I kind of accidentally ended up taking a liberalized Amish approach to using a car. I won't own my own car bc it pulls me away from community, but I will sometimes borrow a car from friends or accept rides bc that forces me to lean on community!
Yeah, I mean this is without getting too deep on how absurdly high some np execs pay is. But even a very well paid ED isn't in spitting distance of, say, the millions the CEO of the NYT makes - despite them also using the sad sack "we need your support!" kind of spin on why you should subscribe.
Maybe it's bc I work in the nonprofit sector but I find it such a disingenuous framing when for-profit biz use this kind of framing when trying to sell you product. The people at the top are making literal fortunes! These are not struggling community orgs!
Totally. I find it super fascinating bc it's been clear for over a decade that the nonprofit model is the only viable route for non-legacy news orgs in the internet age. And that's become so ubiquitous that now for profit news frequently ask for donations and/or frames subs w similar language!
It came to my attention bc now if you're logged into a subscription account the "subscribe" button becomes a "donate" button. IDK when this was added but it seemed new.
The one thing I learned from Hunting Wives was that conservatives only think Signal exists for sneaky things and if you're using Signal you know you're being sus. A dumb take for sure but that was the implication and it tracks here!
Oh nooooo, Lindsey Halligan, this is not how any of this works

I know the city passed a new permit process to make it easier for street vendors to get licenses, I have no idea what (if any) outreach has been done w the folks who sell there. I only see joy & community happening bc of these vendors, the idea of MPD getting to just trash all their food is enraging
There was an older white guy w his dog standing in the bike lane and I stopped to ask him what was up and he said "the cops are finally doing something about the illegal food vendors!" I tried to push back for a few min and he was a real dick. I wonder if he was the one that called the cops.
Yesterday I was biking home from the queer and trans zine fest and as I crossed 31st realized there was a crowd in the street and cop lights up ahead. Knowing these are some of our most vulnerable neighbors rn I was freaked out. It was a crackdown on vendors and cops were dumping all the food.
One of the delights of this summer has been enjoying the new protected bikeway on 10th past Powderhorn and seeing the big joyful crowds of Latin American immigrants who gather for ecuavoley in the field on that edge of the park. There's usually several vendors cooking delicious smelling food.
I’m digging around to see what I can find about Lawrence Wright and it’s perplexing to say the least. appears to work in IT? Has an ig w nothing but beach vacation photos!? possible I have the wrong guy tho
I was in an all ukulele classic country cover band, and we were all big cyclists. One of our few shows was a night of all uke bands!
IDK if I would go that far but I thought the 2016 movie was very unfairly maligned, I really enjoyed it. I thought their biggest mistake though was making it a full reboot and instead of just giving some vague 2 line backstory of how they were connected to the original team.
Whoever decided "every 15 min" counts as high frequency sucks, bc buses are frequently late. A bus that comes every 6-10 min. getting waylayed is not a huge deal bc you won't wait long for the next one, but extend that to 15min and you end up w ppl running inexcusably late for work & appts
And it's worth noting that these are all "good" transit cities by US standards... But none of them are doing it well enough to really be good places to live a life fully dependent on public transit.
Totally agree w this. I grew up in Chicago close to a major el line and took transit everywhere as a teen... but after I left I became a cyclist bc every other city I've lived in (Portland, Seattle, Mpls & St Paul) has way too infrequent transit to be very useful most of the time.
And outside of the active transpo advocacy world I think most ppl see cars as ALL benefits and everything else as ALL drawbacks. I want car brained folks to be able to assess the pros and cons on both sides.
But that's my personal analysis and I know it's different for everyone and it took me a long time to reach this conclusion (and I still consider buying a car again at least once a week). I guess where I land is that we need to acknowledge that all modes have benefits and drawbacks.
I think this is very true and more frequent service would really improve the issue. I also think weighing the cost/benefit of that tax is so nuanced and personal that it's really hard to discuss. Personally the gain of exercise and money saved that I get from biking makes it worth the extra time.
