A couple weeks ago a friend was telling me about someone she knew who had been on maternity leave, and said she had taken "the full year." I said, "A whole year? Wow, what kind of fancy job does she have that gives her a YEAR of leave?" and my friend looked surprised & said, "... welcome to Canada?"

We get cheap public transportation. Good roads.

A working police force.

Pensions.

Incentives to start businesses, to install solar, to renew homes, …

If you sum the total cost of living, including taxes, a working social democracy is cheaper than an ultra capitalistic society.

Pundits like to mock social democracies. Either they are too dumb to understand, or they are too happy with the money they're making, and they lie.

Sure, we pay more taxes. What do we get in return?

Cheap public healthcare. Free preventive healthcare. Cheap public education. Scholarships for "all"

A friend of mine is visiting. I'm on my diarrhea antibiotics. I hoped they would arrive late. Luckily, they did. I had cleaned the bathroom.

Phew.

The final score is:

First day: diarrhea.
Second day: a small cramp.
Third day: diarrhea.

Three day treatment. Let's hope it's over.

When I was a teenager, we learned about Dutch slavers. I thought we were the worst by volume. It wasn't even close. Other countries transported far, far, more. Millions more.

I've been watching some Sarah Paine videos about WWII. She's intelligent, informed, no nonsense. Very interesting.

I can highly recommend her content.

There's some man who is also an expert. He says some dumb shit every once in a while.
