there's extra push on each track, an overlaid layer of midi pressure, and that's the giveaway that ys is from 2025 and not lost 90s bristol trip hop. the tracks are a little more charged, baggier. i wouldn't say less sinister. growling, creepy bass lines give way to parting curtains of heavy bliss

stealing sheep have long been on a trajectory more and more electronic, but never really abandoned their indie rock roots. that makes for a dance pop sound closer to some troubleman unlimited basement weirdness than the neon club sound they're drenched in. "U F33L M3" yes i do. goldfrappy thumping

there are a lot of hardcore bands out there, but not with black women from the south for lead singers, not incorporating power pop and heavy metal breakdowns while still sounding punk, not like upchuck. sst records, or lengua armada. "crossover thrash." when sub pop was dangerous. upchuck. goes hard

gonçalo f cardoso's textural field recording fantasy album is part truth and part lies. taking the idea that field recording is fabrication- that the microphone records what the ear can't hear- a step further, composing music that feels like the memory of a place should. excellent meta-mimicry

so yes. after hours sound. fundamental frequencies takes it back to a time- and place, telepathic fish was a club night after the club night. documenting the emergence of the downtempo music coming out in house and techno's shadow. built w similar pieces, but intended to chill it out, not wind it up

soles of mischief's air max tape was a love letter- the hilfiger tape's more a cautionary tale. the same deal, with songs that name check the fashion, cut with interviews talking about the history and culture. this one is self-conscious, building the brand up and then wondering where the money went

kiln instantly grabs me like the first black moth super rainbow record did, though there's a playfulness here that's less stoned and more uh donca matic xploding plastix. downtempo, echoing shufflers with the sensory triggers turned up to eleven. lots of wiggle and groove
