I think the change is Commander as a stabilizer. Specifically the concept of when someone has a Commander deck, puts it in a box for a year, then pulls it out bc a new coworker mentions Magic its ready to go and compatible in a way old formats never were

I think more than anything, the lesson of Spiderman is the constraints on IP that makes a good set are a bit tighter than first read. World depth into pack immersion depth is a big deal

TMNT the only slated set that has me dubious on this tho, even if I find IRL Shatner on a Standard card egregious

They were hyped for Spiderman 6 months out too.

That said very unsure how much bad sets matter. Theres a huge grace period the game has, see BNG/JOU/M15 into Khans, but I think the end point is the overlap of public sentiment, IP contracting, and design constraining the specs.

Hard to say how many Pick 2 drafts I would have dabbled in, but just seeing the first screenshot of a OM1 draft deck and attempting to translate rolled that back from any to 0.

Extremely optimized sideboard from a GP Top 8, definitely not something I filled in with random cards I accidentally brought to New Jersey, definitely didn't play 2nd Volcanic Strength b/c I found a foil Korean one in that box before I found the 2nd Frostburn Weird.

The Worlds right after Upper Deck lost the license was insane (see: counterfeiting their own YGO cards).

250k prize pool, easiest way to qualify was show up to Gencon and go 3-0 in a Sealed grinder. I want to say it was maybe 150 total players.

Honestly, seeing the unexpected impacts of pick 2 draft in practice was the only thing that made me want to engage with the set. They already tricked me into drafting Unstable and Coldsnap 20 years ago, Im good.

The first game store I ever went to for tournaments once told me to not play my 1.x deck bc I was winning too much. Started playing Standard FNM at a bigger shop further out, never went back.

-Signals volatile, easy for someone to take 2 and pivot under you, more trainwreck tables
-Anchoring 1 color early, soft forcing high value, getting 4 good Green cards Pack 1 + 4 Green 1st picks P2&3 hits playable count
