hello fellow freelance editors,

have you added generative AI policies into your freelance contracts, i.e., cancelling client's that use gen AI to 'write' their manuscript and & subsequent kill fees and procedures

i have language in publishing contracts but not in my own for clients

thank you for reading the books. but i do recall how nasty you were to me in a series of emails last year. I don't forget these things and have no interest in reading your work. maybe think about how you speak to those people who you want consideration from in the future.

Reading the Weird celebrates spooky season all year long, but now an Edgar Allen Poe deep dive feels...thematically appropriate. This week let's discuss "Metzengerstein," Poe's first published story 📖

Haven't watched the video but I enjoyed reading this little breakdown on structuring horror novels 🐈‍⬛✍️

I'm a big proponent of save the cat especially for early writers

teeny reminder that i re-opened recently to agent subs
A reminder to agents that I've reopened to subs. Very interested in literary fiction with darkness; unusual mysteries; unreliable narrators; modern-set gothic; folk horror; horror that leans literary; weird fiction; dark vibes & remote locations

I don't have anything scheduled at the moment but I recommend signing up for the Wild Hunt Books newsletter because subscribers get early notice.
Happy pub day (belatedly)! Woohoo
So delighted that Bear Season is *still* getting lots of love over a year later. A semi-finalist for the Small Spec Book Awards.

*proud editor vibes*

Summer is over... and I'm open again to agent submissions. Can you all please send me your most lush, most dark, most dreadful manuscripts?! A bit on the literary side but playing in the shadows... I'm ready for them #mswl

i feel really dumb that i knew nothing about all this before but when i read about him it's so impossible that it wasn't caught earlier
a bit disheartening to always hear that readers should support indie bookshops but many bookshops don't pay their invoices to small publishers leaving us in the hole for hundreds of £££

bless those bookshops who pay on time without a temper tantrum

something @thebookseller.com should report on
the grim satisfaction when your accounts are up to date but that *another* UK bookseller still owes you £££ from a late unpaid invoice
One of the most disturbing books I've read and I couldn't look away

The Yellow Wallpaper x Shirley Jackson x Our Wives Under the Sea x The Wasp Factory
Howdy #folklore aficionados of bsky!

Can you point me in the direction of any folklore concerning vampires or other shadowy creatures in Italy or Greece (contemporary or historical)?
worked on a manuscript where I realised the person copied Gosford Park word-for-word.... it was bizarre. they didn't quite get why you don't do this.
Hahaha. I told her this and that he does a minimum of 4 edits on his own and she just continued to yell that she didn't want to be Stephen King. She just wanted her book in bookstores. I did not respond.
Totally true. Once had a client that yelled at me via 18 emails that she didn't want to edit and that she only wanted to hear nice things and...SHE JUST WANTED HER BOOK IN BOOKSTORES (actual quote)

She didn't use AI at least 😅
Oh dear, didn't see that one. I find the whole AI thing really strange. What's the point of "writing" a book if you don't actually write it?

The average reader can definitely get the vibe that something is AI written.
Editing enquiries are way down the last year few years. I was reading a self-pub forum where a lot of people say that they are just running their manuscripts through chatgpt to spit out "advice" and rewrite their sentences.

I ask, really what's the point then 🤷‍♀️
