Always spider spotting! Vale of Glamorgan Wales🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿
Posts Media Videos Starter Packs
ID help needed for #Aractober today. Think this Harvestman is Sabacon? Found under some wood in a darkly wooded area. @megabunus.bsky.social Again with my glasses! Should have been better photos so understandable if ID is difficult.
Not sure if this is the case, possibly easier to spot when it's darker they may come out of hiding. Maybe @britishspiders.bsky.social knows the behaviour? With the nights closing in try and look then
No 15 and halfway ish there #Aractober it's the appropriately named 'black bummed money spider' Ostearius melanophygius @britishspiders.bsky.social @tylanberry.bsky.social
The webs are everywhere at the Bay, easy to see on the bird house feeders. Bit more tricky finding an actual spider. Lucky one was sticking it's butt out! As with most things once you get your eye in it will be easier!
Driving through Cardiff decided to visit a few stores with outside garden plant sections. In Rumney B&M and Cardiff Bay Home Bargains was able to find more B.longinqua, a few webs in the first but no spiders. 2nd had lots of webs, juv and possibly adult. @britishspiders.bsky.social @sewbrec.org.uk

Today, I present to you a gorgeous male Larinioides sp.

As adults, male orb weavers will leave their webs to look for a female. This is why one encounters male spiders strolling about.

They mean no harm. They are just looking for love.

Frontal view of male orb weaver (Larinioides sp.) gazing into the camera. The spider has a brownish red colouration and light brown patterns. Dorsal view of same spider. Males of this genus have quite long legs compaired to the females. This is nicely visible on this photograph since all four legs on one side are neatly stretched out. One the other side the first leg is angled, possibly providing the spider a better hold onto the wall it sits on.
Shaken from bamboo today it's Tetragnatha, Long jawed orbweb spider. The sternum patterns can help divide them into two groups. T.extensa/pinicola have a yellow triangle, the others plain brown. #Aractober This one showing the classic pose

Found lots of tiny juv. ant mimics amongst pea gravel today. At least one looks like Phrurolithus festivus to me @britishspiders.bsky.social #Aractober
Must have given you a fright when it jumped out at you! 🤣

Really awesome to see an adult male of the rare Glyphesis servulus in Cambridgeshire recently. A right whopper at 1mm! 😁 @britishspiders.bsky.social @cofnod.org.uk @graemelyons.bsky.social @chalkspring.bsky.social
From the same location as yesterday. Two very much most likely Drassodes sp (Haplodrassus look similar) Varying from a pale toffee to a more velvety mahogany colour, doesn't really show in the pictures #Aractober The median eyes help separate them from the Clubiona

Something else found on willows at Whitlingham today was this Marbled Orb-weaver, Araneus marmoreus var. pyramidatus (srs.britishspiders.org.uk/portal.php/p...). Very noticeable against green leaves, but you can see how it might blend in once the leaves start to yellow in autumn.
A spider with a round yellow abdomen with a brown area near the back. The legs are banded dark brown and white. It is resting on the underside of some willow leaves, with a yellowed willow leaf to the left of the picture.
#Aractober Woodlouse spider, Dysdera crocata. An adult male. Not great palp shots. Has femora spines, garden find plus at 11mm it's not going to be D erythrina. For more ID tips visit srs.britishspiders.org.uk/portal.php/p...
Metellina have a tuning fork marking on the carapace. Think it's Floronia bucculenta, chameleon spider. Not seen one before @britishspiders.bsky.social will know. Great picture
Shame you didn't find any this time. Your right about the photo, Eratigena. Not possible to decide which one without microscope work.
Platnickina tincta. Mostly juv. this time of year. Easy to find amongst ivy in my area. Have used an older photo of a more mature one as they are tiny atm. #Aractober

#arachtober A-Z:

Day 6 - F for Floronia - the chameleon spider
Day 7 - G for Gnaphosa (the best spider genus in the best spider family, no other opinions accepted)
Day 8 - H for Heteropoda - giant huntsman spiders (pictured is the delightful H. davidbowie)

Will try and get a look under the microscope over the weekend. Ta

Mark Telfer and I only went and refound Aulonia albimana on the Isle of Wight two days ago! Quite possibly the best spider find of my life! Lots of other records too. analternativenaturalhistoryofsussex.blogspot.com/2025/10/whit...
