Just published: Interactive map of snow gum dieback over time by @scienceanu.bsky.social @anufennerschool.bsky.social PhD student Weerach Charerntantanakul.

Paper: doi.org/10.1080/15481603.2025.2517922
Map: ee-sosg.projects.earthengine.app/view/sosg-01

🧪 #WildOz #RemoteSensing #MachineLearning
Weerach looks up into a snow gum canopy to assess the tree condition. He's wedged in between the multiple stems. Figure 9 from the paper, showing a visualization of the forest masking and CCR output in comparison with reference LiDAR-derived forest cover. Canopy condition decreases over time, particularly in the Sentinel-2 model. At the bottom are three pictures showing severe and moderate dieback and a healthy snow gum stand.

More than 8,000 hectares of forest lost forever. Fenner researchers, Maldwyn John Evans, Chris Taylor and Prof David Lindenmayer explain that 'more needs to be done to restore Victoria’s forest after logging', including finding $$ to fund regeneration. This is how they suggest it could be done:
Logging devastated Victoria’s native forests – and new research shows 20% has failed to grow back
Forest logging records, satellite data, on-ground surveys and drone photography show nearly 20% of logged areas in Victoria failed to regenerate over the past 40 years.

The @coexistconservlab.bsky.social is bringing the bush stone-curlew back to the wild in SE Australia.

“If successful, the reintroduction will demonstrate how we can work together to recover species from extinction and return them to their natural ecological roles across south-eastern Australia.”
Birds with backpacks released on Phillip Island
Twenty-four bush stone-curlews will be reintroduced to the wild on Phillip Island to help the species regain a foothold in Victoria, where it is critically endangered.

“As climate change fuels rising fire risks, AI-driven wildfire detection could be a game-changer, offering faster alerts, smarter prevention, and a crucial edge in the fight against escalating blazes” – Fenner Professor Marta Yebra.
AI-powered wildfire detection could revolutionise response
A new AI system could help detect wildfires more effectively, offering a powerful tool for early warning and environmental monitoring.

“The logging within the proposed Great Koala National Park is not ecologically sustainable because of where it is occurring (in areas of high conservation value) and because of logging impacts on many threatened species known to occur” warns Prof David Lindenmayer. Read the story:
An Australian state promised to turn native forest into a national koala park. It’s still being logged
The koala was officially declared endangered in the Australian state of New South Wales in February 2022. A year later, the Labor Party promised to create a 315,000-hectare (778,000-acre) Great Koala ...

Welcome to the Coexistence Conservation Lab! 🌿

We're a lab group at ANU researching conservation in the context of rewilding, genetics, translocations, and species coexistence. We aim to understand and restore ecosystems, prioritising species that shape landscapes and promote biodiversity.
