And the Birdlife Bird of the Year winner is…

Tawny Frogmouth

About time in my opinion, although in my portrait of him he looks shocked that she has been chosen… she probably didn’t even write a speech or anything

A few of my tawny frogmouth photos, taken over the years, in honour of this bird winning 2025 Australian bird of the year. These are much-loved birds. Whenever I share a photo of these, there is a huge response.

I should have said that we were horrified to learn that karaoke followed the meal, but we were shown to a separate room.

This seems such an unassuming post. But oh THIS IS AMAZING! Taxonomic names are the bedrock of conservation (and so much more). Anyone who cares about #biodiversity should be celebrating.

📣 #CatalogueOfLife (COL) enhancement supports improved global taxonomic reference for GBIF!

The enhancement expands the taxonomic sources for species information to include global, regional, national, management and digital literature data sources (checklists). 🦋

I was pleased to have the opportunity to meet Nancy Bird Walton. She and my late partner, Jim Murrant, were being entertained by Angus & Robertson in the early 1990s as both had had books published by A&R. We avoided the karaoke that followed dinner!

I hope it went well and you had some fun
I've been watching a pair of #tawny frogmouths who nested near my home. Anxiously awaiting the early flights of the young chick.

Vote now, if you haven't already, for the Guardian's Bird of the Year 2025

It helps to nominate a bird that's endangered, giving it a much higher profile - like Baudin's black cockatoo for example

Please vote - this is a wonderful environmental exercise

I'm exhausted just watching. Sooooo scary!
Oops! I did, of course, mean to write "spooky women".
