Yes we can! In general, if the railway is more reliable (I.e. farther from [mechanical] failure) it will also be safer. In addition, rail is 50-100 times safer than cars. So just by increasing passenger numbers through more reliable services we will enhance societal safety.
(1/4) ROOT CAUSES
- More traffic, especially passengers (double since 2000)
> more severe consequences of disruptions
> faster degradation of the railway
> less room for maintenance
We also have an accumulated ”maintenance debt”, and run mixed freight/passenger traffic that complicates optimization.
(2/4) WHAT TO DO
We must see the railway more as a conveyor belt and less as a road system. This puts avoiding disruptions as main priority, which increases demands on maintenance. In addition there is a need to increase rail capacity to absorb the increased traffic.
(3/4) AVOID DISRUPTIONS:
Better control of degradation by using condition monitoring and degradation prediction to allow more precise focus of maintenance actions. Prioritize daily maintenance with methods that minimizes traffic disturbances but prevents failures. Keep preparedness for disruptions.
(4/4) INCREASE CAPACITY:
In the short term actions related to timetabling, longer trains etc can be efficient, but they have limits. In the long term more tracks will be needed, especially at lines and line sections operating close to the capacity limit.
