What heโ€™s right about is decreasing the โ€œGreen premiumโ€ (and he does acknowledges that the โ€œpremiumโ€ is already negative in many sectors, like renewable electricity production).
As you said, where I think he misses the mark, by a lot, is the risk of a false dichotomy between climate mitigation and addressing other causes of human suffering. I understand why people are wary of this framingโ€”it has been increasingly co-opted in bad faith by fossil fuel interests.
I agreeโ€”the memo was filled with nuance and solutions discussion not captured in the news headlines. Itโ€™s easy to reduce it to โ€œBill Gates says climate change isnโ€™t important after allโ€โ€”he even anticipates this response and explicitly says it IS important (in bold text!)
Why should physicians, including radiologists, talk about climate change? โ“

A real privilege to welcome Dr. Kate Hanneman to the University of Calgary this week as our Visiting Professor.

Her talk on sustainability in medical imaging and planetary health was both inspiring and practical.

Excited to keep pushing these conversations forward here in Calgary!๐ŸŒฑ ๐Ÿฉป ๐ŸŒŽ

Even if you wrapped the entire planet in oil and gas wells,
theyโ€™d still end up as stranded assets as the world moves on to cleaner (and cheaper) energy.

One of the biggest mistakes fossil fuel execs can make is
equating SHORT-TERM PROFITS with LONG-TERM REALITY!
Itโ€™s true we canโ€™t solve climate change without big emitters like China taking action.

But itโ€™s equally true we canโ€™t solve it without smaller emittersโ€”especially wealthy ones like Canadaโ€”doing their part.

Weโ€™re not โ€œtoo small to matter.โ€ If everyone thought that way, weโ€™d never get anywhere.

This isnโ€™t just feel-good symbolism. It pressures other to follow.

๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ด Take Norway: 0.1% of global emissions. But >80% of new cars EVs sends a powerful message: If a northern petrostate can, hard for other nations to argue its โ€œnot feasibleโ€.

COโ‚‚ lingers for decades, continuing to warm the planet. Many wealthy โ€œ<2%โ€ nations have a higher share of ๐˜ค๐˜ถ๐˜ฎ๐˜ถ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ท๐˜ฆ emissions.

Wealthy nations built their wealth by burning fossil fuelsโ€”now they have a responsibility to invest in clean energy.
Solar cost has dropped 99.8% since the 1970sโ€”90% in the last decade alone.

The driving force behind this? Increased deployment and economies of scale.

So Canadaโ€™s solar does more than reduce domestic emissionsโ€”it send a signal to global markets, encouraging investment in solar elsewhere.

The โ€œweโ€™re negligibleโ€ argument assumes only domestic emissions count, which isnโ€™t the case. Global markets and politics are connected.

When countries adopt clean tech, costs go down worldwide, shaping
If every <2% emitter countryโ€”particularly wealthy onesโ€”shrugged and said โ€œweโ€™re too small to make a difference,โ€ the biggest share of emissions would remain unaddressed.

๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ Itโ€™s like voting: one ballot rarely decides an election. But if everyone thinks โ€œmy vote doesnโ€™t matter,โ€ democracy collapses.

Only 6 countries on Earth have a >2% share of emissions.

๐˜Œ๐˜ท๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜บ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜ค๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ณ๐˜บ emits <2% and might consider themselves to be โ€œnegligibleโ€. But together, these โ€œsmallโ€ emitters make up 36% of global COโ‚‚โ€”more than China.
If Canadaโ€™s COโ‚‚ emissions fell to zero, the climate would barely noticeโ€”we emit <2% of global total.

Its a familiar argument:

And I get itโ€”graphs like this ๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ฏ make us feel powerless.
