I just hate Orwell so much. Like Churchill, he's one of those guys that gets held up as this incredible icon of British Values when you're in school over here then the moment you do even a little research it turns out he was a complete monster.

In conclusion: Orwell sucks and has no redeeming qualities and the fact he has an entire society and legions of fans who will leap to defend his honour to this day is yet another stain on all that Britain stands for.

...he is writing from the British tradition where his attitudes have been wholly internalised by the misogynistic culture that he was raised in and contributed to.

He had a lot to say about authoritarianism, but mostly to exculpate himself, whilst he never felt he had to justify his sexual politics

1984 is extremely clear its misogynistic portrayal of Julia as a hypocritical woman with no real political awareness or agency; her role in the plot is as a sex object who ultimately dooms the protagonist.

Orwell was not subtle in his opinions of women, they just aren't talked about much because...

This carries over into the fiction he wrote which wasn't just to burnish his own credentials.

A Clergyman's Daughter presents its titular protagonist with a choice between marriage to a rapist who she hates or a return to a life of meaningless drudgery with no alternatives. She chooses the latter.

Accusations of rape in his past. Accusations which were ruinous to bring against a man as a woman at that time let alone a man who became as respected as he did

Born Eric Arthur Blair (thus 'Eric' in the above quotes), Orwell was very much a product of Empire. He was born into a family of Indian colonisers who made their money through slavery in Jamaica.

This, too, tends to get ignored because he spent some time dossing around Paris doing poverty tourism.

Most people dismiss Orwell because he was a snitch and a traitor who collaborated with the British government to kill communists and queers.

Did you also know he was a rapist? Probably not because it tends to get talked about like this (from The Orwell Society):

First, the relationship was considerably more erotic than Jacintha, (conceived, after all, under Queen Victoria) could confess in print. Second, Eric proposed marriage to Jacintha before leaving for Burma, and was wounded by her rejection. Third, in September 1921, Eric tried at least half-heartedly to rape her, which naturally drove a wedge between them. We need to reevaluate her “solution to the problem of his life” in the light of this new intelligence.

She admitted that she and Eric had later engaged in what used to be called “heavy petting” (“some intimacy but not full intercourse” was how she put it). Had the Aztecs and Incas shown a bit more interest in the world surrounding them - and had they known what the Spaniards had done to their neighbours - they might have resisted the Spanish conquest more keenly and successfully.

The first time I laid eyes on Akakios, child of Diodotos, xe was drunkenly trying to start a high-end turbobike outside the Draped Vine. Xe had a young-looking face, but xer hair was bone white and xer slight yet toned arms were covered in fading scars. I could tell by xer eyes that xe was wasted, but otherwise xe looked like every hard-working sailor I drank with in those days; it was a strange sight for a high-end establishment like the Vine.

Behind the sailor was a girl. Her hair and dress were a deep red—like blood oozing from a wound—and her disinterested smirk marked her as the kind of woman I would have let walk all over me. Her skin was nearly as pale as Akakios' hair. The elegance of that woman almost outmatched the elegance of the bike. Not quite.

A rather annoyed parking attendant stood next to the bike, one hand holding it steady as xe struggled with the controls. The man was the usual half-tough character in ostentatious white garb, with the name of the bar displayed on his crisp suit in dark purple. He was at the end of his rope.

"Look," he said, his voice as sharp as a knife, "you've got to move the bike. I can even turn it on for you if it gets you out of here faster." He reached for the controls but yelped when Akakios slapped his hand away.
