I know the first 4 and last 4 digits of my own German cell phone number. I almost have those pesky middle 4 numbers. I've had this number for 13 years.

I do not know my husband's cell or work number. But I do know the phone numbers of my deceased grandparents and my two best grade school friends.

It is not good that we have lost the skill of memorizing phone numbers of those closest to us. I used to know my adult kids' cell numbers.

This is the Hirschgulasch from a few years ago when we were having fun with spoon servings.

We can't eat it until tomorrow because an Austrian relative insisted that Gulasch needs to be made one day and eaten the next - not on the same day! Who are we to argue with an Austrian about Gulasch?? 😅
Homemade Spätzle with venison Gulasch and Preiselbeeren garnished with parsley presented on two elegant spoons resting on a dark plate. It is meant to be eaten as one bite, in the style of a German cooking show called "The Taste."

Adding a Swabian "Schluck" of wine... 😂
A chef pouring wine from two bottles, one in each hand, into a stainless steel contained filled with venison and vegetables to marinate.

Good lord, my husband is cooking Hirschgulasch for tomorrow's dinner, and I need a glass of wine to go with that aroma!! 🦌🍷

After the pictured step (simmering for 2 hours), he has to separate the meat from the veggies. We call that "Aschenbrödelarbeit." 😅

It's hardly believable, isn't it? And those I know over there are pretty quiet. I think they just focus on the moment and when I mention some recent event or dumbass thing the dear leader said, I get "So awful" or a mad emoji. After yrs of hearing "How could the Germans just let that happen?"

Well, _she_ is definitely against that. She is disgusted by the gun culture in the US, which is one of the reasons she says she will never move back there.

I posted a video of Kaya coughing up a pellet on my FB feed with a mild content warning, and an American non-falconer friend of mine told me to take it down because it's gross and no one wants to see that.
Americans and their aversion to bodily functions...😅😉🦅

Roundabouts in Wisconsin are generally hated, from the comments I've heard. Ptobably because of the "Midwest nice" thing. My grandpa in the one roundabout in his town always yielded to drivers entering - out of politeness - and there was no changing his mind.

This is true. 🙂 She can be a dear and a goof, and a little baby feepy bird when she wants a treat. But she's also a killer.

I do love floofy puppies, though!! 😍

Falconry is not always pretty, that's for sure. 🙂 But I make sure her catch is unalived quickly, in line with a German hunter's responsibility. Nature is crueler.

Kaya gives me the side-eye while snarling, "Do not you DARE try to take this magpie from me. It's MINE!!"

When she did "trade," she unheaded the deceased magpie, keeping the head in her claws, so we let her have it and quit for the day. 😅
A Harris hawk is mantling over her kill on a dirt field in the bright sunlight. Her falconer's bag is under her in part because she has a grip on that as well, and her falconer's glove is lying on the ground next to her.

The equivalent in the US might be roundabouts. 😅 So many Amis hate them and don't know what to do. Germans think, "How can this be difficult??"

With right on red, Amis think, "How can this be difficult/dangerous??"

Part of the problem is that it's so rare in Germany that drivers here don't know what to do. Recently I was in a car with a German driver at a red light with a sign saying turning right on red is allowed, and the driver looked left but turned w/o stopping. 😳 I told her the stop is still required.

I have not! I'll try it tonight. But he's half British and has spent a lot of time with Americans, so his accent is messed up.

He has us wetting ourselves with laughter when he pronounces "butter" like an American. 😂
amiimschwabenland.bsky.social
I agree. I keep hearing "Now is the time to..." because of some insane thing the blowhard said. Yeah, whatever. "The time" was a hella long time ago. It's all wind.
"Surely THIS will be the last straw."

No, it clearly won't be.

My German husband did not believe me at first when I told him how "hyperbole" is pronounced.

I say "coxswain" incorrectly, too, though not often. 😅

Oh damn...This is like standing at a street corner and watching someone else cross at a red Ampelmännchen! Maybe I can do it, too?? But it would be so wicked... 🫣

Do you maybe need a new pair of running shoes anyway? Birthday coming up? Early Christmas present? 🙂 You can't run without running shoes!

Any mention of the TSA, especially a video like this one intending to be serious, reminds me of the sultry SNL skit from years ago: "A Holiday Message from the TSA." 😂

"We make it our business...to touch yours."

Great article! I pronounce most of them correctly, and here's hoping I remember the ones I was getting wrong!

What about "remonstrate"? Where does the emphasis lie?
amiimschwabenland.bsky.social
I muted the miscreant-in-chief's name last night and this morning I'm enjoying Bsky again!! 🙂

At least in Germany (Europe?) flies have a small chance of getting out, since we don't have screens on every window like in the US. 😅 Still, though...

This meme makes me laugh every time, though. It seems only slightly exaggerated! 😂
