It’s been super exciting to work on a primetime, network show (did mention we’re on right after The Simpsons?!) and I can’t wait for all of you to check it out!

I’ve been working on this show for the last few months and now its season two premiere is TONIGHT at 8:30pm on #fox and available next day on #Hulu. Make sure to keep watching every Sunday!
I have no idea why the laurels came out so dark and apparently I can’t edit the post but I meant to post this image!
And if you do want to read this almost-award winning script, it's available here on my website: www.alyssafeller.com/tv-writing

These days, I guess you have to take any win, even if it's a second round win.

Would it have been cool and validating to actually make it to the semi-finals? Yes. But is this cool too? Yeah, kind of. Will I submit again? Maybe. Did I post this to brag a little since there is very little else to brag about at the moment? Yes.
So I submitted and... I got into the second round. Yay? They say about 20% of scripts make it to this round, so I guess it was better than 80% of the other scripts that were submitted.
But then I found out the Austin Film Festival has a spec script contest, and considering WWDITS's final season was last year, I knew that this spec didn't have much shelf life left.
So what did I do with the script? Mostly, nothing. I think I used it to apply to one fellowship, and then put it up on my website as a sample. What else was I supposed to do with it?
I ended up having a lot of fun writing the script, and between frustrating project after frustrating project, it was a joy to write something as stupid and silly as a bunch of idiotic vampires celebrating a vampire holiday I completely made up, with one overused Christmas trope after another.
However, I had gotten this really crazy idea in my head - I wanted to write a 'What We Do In The Shadows' Christmas episode. Like I said, crazy.
But a couple of years ago I had a whim to write a spec script. Why? I don’t know, because as most people “in the biz” know, they really aren’t a good use of time since no one wants to read them.
I don’t often submit scripts to script competitions. In fact, I don’t think I have in over six-ish years. I decided a few years ago that I didn’t really want to spend any more money on scriptwriting classes, workshops, competitions, etc.
My favorite part of The Bear is that it takes place in a small little town called Chicago where everyone went to school together and everyone seems to know each other.

Martin tells us about going from a psychology major to an entomologist to a Fred Rogers Productions Writers' Neighborhood fellow, his field research which involved saving California’s avocado and citrus crops from invasive insect species...
Martin Castillo was an Entomologist

Writer MARTIN CASTILLO (Spirit & Friends, Donkey Hodie) joins Alyssa to talk about his time as a entomology research technician, aka a bug scientist.
