On 12 October 1459, Richard, Duke of York, fled with his son Edmund, Earl of Rutland, to Ireland. Meanwhile, his eldest son Edward, Earl of March, and allies Warwick and Salisbury escaped to Calais, the Yorkists’ last stronghold abroad.

Sir Thomas Wyatt died on 11 October 1542.

Wyatt had suffered from severe headaches since 1539 and died three years later at Sherborne in Dorset, aged thirty-nine. He was laid to rest in Sherborne Abbey.

On 5 October 1518, Princess Mary Tudor was formally betrothed to François, Dauphin of France.

The ceremony took place at Greenwich Palace when Mary was just two years old. Her intended, François, was only a few months old.

Elizabeth de Valois, queen and beloved wife of King Philip II of Spain, died at the Palace of Aranjuez.

On 3 October 1568 she bore a daughter, but the child was stillborn- and the young queen succumbed to complications soon after.

Dorothy Stafford was born on 1 October 1526, the daughter of Henry Stafford and Ursula Pole, granddaughter of Margaret Pole- the last great heiress of the Plantagenet line. She married William Stafford, widower of Mary Boleyn.

On 30 Sept 1473, John de Vere, Earl of Oxford, seized St. Michael’s Mount, determined to revive the Lancastrian cause. Edward IV answered with a 22-week siege. Oxford surrendered in Feb 1474, only to escape & lead Tudor’s vanguard at Bosworth.

George Buchanan, the renowned Scottish humanist, historian, and scholar, died on 28 September 1582.

Buchanan died in his flat at Kennedy’s Close in Edinburgh. He was laid to rest at Greyfriar’s Kirkyard on 29 September 1582.

Catherine of Aragon left Spain, bound for England, on 27 September 1501.

At 5 o’clock in the evening, her fleet put to sea. She landed safely at Plymouth on 2 October, ready to meet her betrothed-Arthur, Prince of Wales.
