detroit style pizza and new haven style pizza (ok, fine, apizza) are both wonderful but they are basically different foods!

just looked at his IMDB and my goodness the man works a lot!

Yes, makes sense. I tend to be skeptical of the anti-elitism (which tends to carry anti-intellectualism) of populist candidates, including left populists like Bernie. Certainly would be interesting if Platner could pick up some of the voters attracted to right populists in the LePage/Poliquin tent.

The Maine progressive whose career I'm most familiar with is Shenna Bellows – I interviewed her when she was at the ACLU – though I don't think she's run with as much of a populist streak as Platner. Is that comparison reasonable, or no?

(Or, for that matter, is he more like Cutler?)

all of which is really to say: we do this because this is how our brains work. the one thing we can work to avoid is reifying our rationalizations.
alexremington.bsky.social
i think what typically happens is the classic process of rationalization, by which we seek an explanation for a feeling, then confuse the post-hoc explanation for the actual reason we're feeling that feeling — bc we're evolutionarily designed to work this way. *then* we inappropriately generalize.

i, too, personally believe something is important because i know about it:

1) the firesign theatre
2) the stand-up comedian stewart lee
3) the adventures of buckaroo banzai

and it's just so typical that they decided that kjerstad was untouchable. it's one thing to be unwilling to trade an up-the-middle guy like gunnar henderson or samuel basallo, but a corner bat is the absolute epitome of a guy who should be dealt from a position of strength.

one thing many washington post critics – sietsema, chris richards, et al – have done very forcefully is to argue for the significance of the stuff we have in washington dc. sietsema has probably been the loudest voice in the country persuasively arguing that dc is one of america's best food cities.

it is *absolutely* a differentiable skill and it is also one that consists entirely of gamesmanship and ref-working and arguably a skill area that should not exist in a fairly officiated game

This is one of my cranky old man schticks that I am right about. Eeeeeeeeverybody thinks they can spot the narc. No you can’t. They are actually good at their jobs and the idea that you can spot one a mile away is 1) hubris and 2) propaganda that works in their favor

managing an extremely large region is inherently challenging, across every business sector imaginable!

the LA Times has been in a tough spot for *years*; its perceived weakness was why Aaron Kushner tried to expand the orange county register to eat the LAT's lunch. didn't work, of course, and yet! then the LAT buyer tried buying the san diego paper to shore up the region; that didn't work, either.
