That's standard historian speak, but so much better: She moves through registers to show how ideas curdle as they travel.

And I love how “velveteen intimacy” is soft, strange, faintly uncomfortable.

Every president from Reagan through Biden stuck to the same pattern: one exam, one memo, one reassurance that all is well.

The exams are stagecraft, meant to show the president is steady, not to check if he is. They fend off questions about age or stamina.

Trump heading to Walter Reed for a “semiannual physical.” The White House calls it a “routine annual checkup.”

His last one was in April.

No modern president has had two physicals in a year.

- Strategize in advance (could happen here)
- Leverage internal expertise (strategize with political scientists, public policy scholars and law faculty)
- Respond collectively and support one another
